Equestria is an old land. It was born of Gaia, first mare and mother of all. She gave birth to three filly princesses – the eldest, Eclipse, the middle child, Celestia, and the youngest, Luna. They ruled in harmony as the ponies of the plains settled down into villages and towns, until five thousand years ago when a little village in the Valley of Dreams was formed. These ponies worshiped Gaia above all others and Eclipse rebelled. She wanted to rule alone.
Gaia sacrificed herself to open a portal to Opaque, a world in which Eclipse could do no harm. Before her death Gaia left behind the Harmony Locket, entrusting her two young daughters to look after it, but Luna was too young to remember and Celestia was trying to bring her sister up as a normal little pony in a world of dangerous tribes and few safe havens. The locket was lost and new gods took over as the sisters grew.
What no pony knew, however, was that Eclipse had wielded a Rainbow of Darkness in the fight against her mother. Gaia thought the rainbow was sent into Opaque with her daughter, but it escaped and a thousand years later a centaur named Tirek found it. He used it against the ponies, turning them into monstrous beasts, and a Shadow covered the land. The Great Firefly flew across the rainbow to retrieve the human girl, Megan, and together they retrieved the Locket of Harmony from the Moonchick, who found it after Gaia’s death.
With the aid of the Rainbow of Light, the Dark Rainbow and Tirek were defeated, and the Age of Rainbows was born. The ponies forgot about their old gods, forgot about Gaia and the princesses, and worshiped the Rainbows instead. For two thousand years the struggle between the Rainbow of Light and Dark Rainbow continued, with each side choosing their Champions to fight against each other with their element. Sometimes the Dark won, and sometimes the Light, but there was always balance.
Discord destroyed the balance between the Dark and Light. He attacked Dream Valley and caused disharmony among the Rainbow of Light’s Champions. As the Champions bickered, a smooze-like disease began to destroy Equestria. Happy with his role in the disaster, Discord found a tacky little trinket on the ground and decided to wear it, since it clashed so nicely with his coat. The trinket was the Locket of Harmony.
With the Rainbow of Light locked in its little golden prison around Discord’s neck, he ruled Equestria for a hundred years before the Princesses of Day and Night found him and the trinket he wore. They fought, and in the battle the locket was shattered. The Rainbow split into its stripes once again, and together the sisters used the Elements of Harmony to trap Discord in stone. They restored balance to Equestria, and became the chosen leaders once more.
Light and Dark ruled together as the land changed, new technologies were born, and Dream Valley eventually became no more than a name in the history textbooks of Ponyville. The land was harmonious. Celestia ruled the day, bringing the dawn and the sun. Luna ruled the night, bringing the moon and the stars. For over a thousand years the sisters ruled together, harmonious, before the ponies once again forgot the beauty of the night and turned to the sun. Luna became jealous, just as her eldest sister had so long ago, and of that jealousy was born the monstrous Night Mare Moon.
After an intense battle between the sisters, Luna was trapped in the moon for a thousand years, and Celestia went on to rule Equestria alone. When Night Mare Moon was able to break out of her solitary prison she banished Celestia to Opaque, not even able to remember the eldest sister who was already sent there. It was up to Twilight Sparkle and her friends to save Equestria by finding the Elements of Harmony and using them to unleash the Rainbow’s power on the dark mare. Night Mare Moon changed back into young Luna, and Celestia was released from Opaque.
Eclipse knew then that there was a way out. As she brooded on it Discord returned to Equestria, and although Twilight Sparkle and her friends were able to vanquish him back into stone, his brief reign has weakened the veil between the worlds. It’s only a matter of time before the dark queen breaks through.
