"Alrighty then... Ha!" Rocknote shouted.
The red stallion threw his legs out behind him as hard as he could, sending a grouping of stones down upon the wooden beasts. He couldn't really tell if they were connecting or not, but he kept sending them down in a hail of rock, hoping to strike them hard enough to dismantle the pieces of which they were made.
"Come on 'Bow!!" Rock shouted at the small unicorn whilst still raining rocks onto the wolves, disregarding all secrecy previously maintained, "Get the hell up here!"

Riiiiiip.
"Aiie!" Shouted Nightbow as a good portion the chartreuse tassle of her tail hair separated from the rest. Almost half her tail would look stubbed in a few weeks time, but the unicorn was more afraid than hurt. The beast was right behind her, but the following second it too gave a yelp of pain - a gust of dirt, embedded with tiny pebbles, had hit it right in its eyes and the timber wolf turned to Redd Moss.
Youth stood now before the daunting task of dodging her accomplice's rain of rocks while her agility was severely handicapped. RockNote was stronger than her - a rock the size of her hoof she didn't have time to evade, but thankfully it crashed onto her armoured back with a clank.
While she ran she lowered her head to bite down on the chest crest, but it wasn't enough to release its grip. The armour was strapped around her stomach, too. Taking the opportunity while the wolf was temporarily either immobilized or occupied with the other mare, Nightbow spent some swiftly fleeting seconds to free herself before cantering uphill. Once she had made it there, she called over to RockNote: "Help me move this rock!" On the edge was a huge moss covered boulder. If they could push it over it would roll down the slope.

RockNote hurried over to Nightbow and the large hunk of stone. He swiftly glanced from the boulder to the timberwolves and back, trying to determine how to roll it off without hitting their guide. The bother some wolves just kept moving! There was no real guarantee they would hit their mark and nothing else. After squandering valuable moments considering which exact angle to push the rock in, Rock realized all the speculation in the world would neither stop the wolves nor push the boulder.
He stood behind the boulder next to Nightbow and decided just to push it and simply hope for the best. His gambling luck hadn't exactly been the best whenever he actually tried, but there was a first time for everything, and he had somepony else around this time. The earth stallion placed a solid shoulder on the rock's hard side and starting putting pressure on it.
The boulder barely budged and inch, but he thought he could feel it shift. He growled lowly at the effort and pushed harder.

Redd Moss kicked up more dirt in effort to get the Timber wolf away from the small unicorn. The large stallion had managed to get to the top of the hill while Redd kept thier attacker busy. The little Unicorn had gotten out of the way ...now all that was left was for Redd her self to move.
Easier said then done. Another hoof full of dirt and Redd Moss galloped up the hill to join the other two in pushing the bolder. "Come on put your backs into..." Redd Moss pushed as hard as she could adding her force to the rock.

She felt her hind hooves skid on the forest floor - the hill was scattered with pine needles. Nightbow started walking towards the boulder while putting all of her weight against it, but it barely moved. With RockNote putting in extra effort at her side, she suddenly had an idea. She backed away from the boulder and charged, intent on adding the extra force that would push it all over. As the unicorn was about leap into the air and hit it with all fours, Redd Moss' face appeared from down the hill. What are you...?! While glad the mare was out of the way, her mane stood on end - a growl followed the older mare. She was fast, but the timber wolf was following closely behind.
With Moss' strength added to theirs, the huge rock gave way.

[sorry for the wait, exams and such tomfoolery]
RockNote took a few steps back to watch clearly as the boulder started sliding and rolling down the slope, slowly at first, then picking up speed farther down. The distance between the closest timberwolf and the momentum-filled piece of hardened earth got steadily smaller, then collided with the sound of crunching wood and snapping twigs. After the boulder had passed another few meters without hesitating in the slightest, all that lay on the ground from the beast were some leaves and completely annihilated sicks.
The remaining timberwolves stopped approaching the trio of ponies gathered at the hill's top and after another crushed wolf, appeared to think better of their assault and return to the deep woods.
"Well, that went better than expected." RockNote said, "Are the two of you all right?"

" If by better then expected you mean thank the Sun and Moon we're still alive! then yes that went well." Redd Moss breathed a hefty sigh. That was all too close for her liking. The ranger mare shook her short cut mane, "Booth of you inside the cabin before we get in any more trouble...I have a bone to pick with both of you."

"Hmf. Sun and Moon don't have anything to do with it." RockNote scoffed, "Biggest reason we're alive is luck, no magic or princess is going to change that."
Rock blew a stray silver strand of mane out of his eyes and turned to the direction the Ranger had told them the rift was in.
"And despite how much I would just love to get chewed out today, I have things I'd rather do that aren't a complete waste of my time," the red stallion said over his shoulder, "I've heard anything you care to tell me, and will gladly deny any punishment you want to give me."
He turned halfway around and gave the gruff mare a sideways glance.
"Is there any real reason I shouldn't just walk away?"

The plum unicorn could read irritation in RockNote's gestures. Granted she too understood that they had blown their cover, but the little mare would hang her head in shame. They had not just put themselves in danger, but the forest ranger too. Because of their juvenile stupidity. Their naivety. In fact, if it hadn't been for Moss ...
"Is there any real reason I shouldn't just walk away?"
"RockNote!" Nightbow exclaimed censoriously. Up until then she had held her tongue, but they were in deep waters here. She turned to Redd Moss. "Ma'am," she pleaded, "if it weren't for you we'd probably be monster chow by now. They'd be picking their teeth with our bones," she empathised in order to calm RockNote down, and simultaneously expressing gratefulness towards the bigger mare. She shook the goosebumps from her mane roots.
"Please, don't turn us in. We're sorry for the trouble we've caused. I think it would be best if we just got out of your mane and left for the plains." If she dared she could still explore the woods beyond. With or without the red colt.

"Is there any real reason I shouldn't just walk away?"
Of all the things...self centered Colt! Red Moss snorted some ponies just didn't understand the meaning of 'dangerous' or what her warnings ment. Redd Moss was just about to give the young Stallion a piece of her mind when the little unicorn spoke up.

Redd Moss flicked an ear in slight annoyance she was still plenty mad at Rocknote. "Ah well, I guess it's no harm done for now. " The ranger mare let out a sigh. "But why did you two come here anyway? Don't tell me to see the rift right?"

The purple unicorn's words easily appealed to Rocknote, and gave him a bit more of a rational point of view. Once she stopped, Rock lowered his head. Her words made him feel like a colt caught with his hoof in the cookie jar. Still, though, he had to maintain appearances, so he brought his head back up to its previous height, and turned to face the two mares.
"But why did you two come here anyway? Don't tell me you wanted to see the rift?"
Rock opened his muzzle to answer the question, but choked on the words he hadn't even said yet. He closed it again and simply nodded. He avoided eye contact with either of them while he walked past to the cabin. As he passed the ranger, he muttered an apologetic "sorry."

Nightbow was not used to trying to look innocent, but she gave it her best shot. Features of her face rippled like a perfectly still surface of a pool disturbed - an opportunity, however foolish, had presented itself, and whilst quickly slipping away for every passing second the unicorn had to decide whether to go for it or not.
She caved in. "Well..." With this single world slowly escaping her lips, their objective had been laid clear for Redd Moss to see. Guilty. "Bu-but you know the forest, right? And the Rift? Wouldn't we be safe to investigate this phenomenon with you as our guide?"
Her suggestion was bold. She was treading dangerous ground here. Might as well have changed her mind and begged the mare to prosecute them. "Somepony has to find out what's behind this mess," Nightbow urged and motioned towards the giant mushrooms.

Rocknote waited for several moments beside the cabin's door, listening to Nightbow's pleads to the ranger. A long silence followed the last of her words. Rock turned around once again, headed back in the direction he had intended to go before.
As the red stallion passed the fluorescent artist, he hesitated for a moment, then commented, "Good luck reasoning with the ranger, miss negotiator. You two can check out the weird mushrooms and get your mane done up afterward, while I go to see whatever's our there for myself. It can't be that dangerous."
Without waiting for a proper response, Rock continued walking down the hill, almost reaching the edge of the dense forest.

Youth almost took offence to the musician's statement. She wasn't one of them frilly little ponies who spent their days at the Pretty Parlor, and it definitely showed. Was his intention to spur her to follow, or insult her guts? Either way, 'Bow was left frozen on the spot.
She took one skittish moment to eye the imposing ranger, smiling ever so politely. She sighed deeply. And that someone, it seems, would be yours truly. There was no middle way here, and she hated it. "I'm ... I'm so very sorry. For your inconvenience, that is." She did a head-heel turn and rushed after RockNote whilst yelling: "Sorry!"
What on earth was she doing? She was committing a crime, resisting arrest! Redd Moss would surely sound the alarm now. ... For what, exactly? Nightbow asked herself. I'm just a little pony venturing into the forest. A very ... stupid ... little pony.

The corner of Rocknote's muzzle twitched up into a half-smile. Curiosity is a cruel addiction, and all one needed to do was give a little push to get somepony to start chasing after it. Musicians, authors, adventurers, artists had all had a taste of it as some point. The "drug" of sorts has many side effects; disobedience, insomnia, and like now, needless danger all add to the list.
With a glance backward to confirm the mare was still following him, Rock slowed his long strides down to a more manageable pace for her, allowing her to catch up as the two plodded through the dense mass of dark trunks and green foliage. Birds chirped and scattered as the equines approached.
"So," Rocknote awkwardly began as he stepped over an exposed tree root, "Do you know what happened to get the royal guard all riled up out here in Whinnyapolis? I'd heard there was a little increase in crime, but that wouldn't warrant this much of a security increase."
