Knight Shade was a lost cause. With a bleeding hoof he wouldn't be able to run, and it was obvious he couldn't protect himself with a weapon. He was not part of the herd, so he was not Fennec's responsibility. And the Faye pony could easily fly away - also not Fennec's responsibility.
With a great heave he slashed at the stoneback before him, cut the creature's face, and ran around it. If Knight Shade was lucky the creatures would persue, but Fennec doubted it. "Gaia protect you!" he called back as he ran, dodging trees and putting as much distance between himself and the monsters as possible.
The forest ended abruptly at a river and Fennec skid to a halt. A look over his shoulder confirmed that none of the stonebacks followed, but the forest on the other side of the river was even stranger than the one he'd just come from. The trees were colorful, and so large it would take several ponies standing ears to tail to make a ring around one tree. Strange, colorful ponies walked between the trees, and some even walked into or out from the trees. Perhaps he could find safety in one of these large trees?

[Sorry for this big post and giving no chance to jump in, but I am finishing this thread now.]
With Fennec gone, the stonebacks were starting to circle around the remaining ponies. As Knight Shade backed off from his attacker, he found another one snapping at his back hooves. Twirling around, the little stallion caught sight of Fennec running, hearing him yell a blessing that he in his fit of panic could not make out. He ... he'd left him to his fate! The stonebacks were coming closer. Knight Shade's leg hurt and he wanted to escape, jump over their heads, but he couldn't. I'm just too small, am I not? the singer thought darkly as the shadows fell upon him. They were closing in, circle complete, and they would engulf and devour him, just like the shadows had already done. With no idea how it had happened, he could only assume that he had screwed up again. In his last moments he prayed to the rainbows and begged for her mother to find means to forgive his stupidity.
There was a forceful rushing sound followed by a boom. A white lightning struck the ground in front of the cowering Knight Shade, hitting the stoneback before it could snap his neck. A most ethereal voice echoed somewhere above him, but he could not make out who spoke or what it said. The light flickered before his ebony eyes and Knight Shade fell into darkness.
