Geoff shook his head disdainfully at the company Turnkey had brought... invited... allowed..., well, they barged in. He shrugged his shoulders and cleaned up the monopony board. The stillness of the house shook him. He was used to living alone, but even in Canterlot there had always been plenty of street traffic and noise to keep him company. Living by a railroad tended to do that.
He muttered to himself. Anything to fill up the oppressive silence. He was quite unaccustomed to living underground, and consequently the silence shook him. He supposed the least he could do was clean the dishes. He had not exactly been the best of guests, detonating a pound of explosive in the living room, breaking the wing of another guest, breaking the table and creating a huge mess.
After finishing that menial task and doing his best to replace the dishes where they seemed to fit he searched for something else to do. A mischievous smile snuck onto his face. What lay in Kai's room? He was a fairly enigmatic person, friendly enough, but reserved and definitely hiding some secrets. A pony's possessions could reveal much about them. And he had left in too much of a hurry to lock them up. At least, Geoff hoped so.
He paused, and wondered if he should be worried by his and Sil's absence, but they were both strong ponies and should be fine. Maybe.
He squashed those thoughts and, careful not to leave any hoofprints, entered Kai's bedroom. While he had slept here the night prior, he had been much too intoxicated to sleep. Or to snoop. It was fairly taciturn, a bed, a bedside table, a few candles. Of course there were the various nuts and bolts and machinery parts laying around, but that wasn't particularly interesting. Geoff took to the drawers. A couple of books Magic and YOU, How not to Die, and The Joy of Cooking: 1000 and 1 Ways to Prepare Dragon Meat.
Interesting selection to say the least. Didn't reveal too much more about Kai than Geoff already knew, but interesting nonetheless.
Geoff carefully replaced the books in the order he found them and closed the drawer, then crouched down on his hooves to peer underneath the bed. Very clean, no more than a few specks of dust. That and a small wooden chest, which Geoff carefully pulled out and attempted to open. It would not. Geoff looked carefully for a lock, but could not find one. And then he realized he was holding it upside down. It was clever. Giving the illusion of security is often just as good as actual security. Most ponies are deterred even by that. Inside the chest was... nothing? Geoff stuck his hoof in it in disbelief. And then he knocked the base. "Clever and cleverer." He muttered at the hollow base, which turned out to be a trapdoor of sorts. Opening that he discovered a lone picture of a pink mare, smiling. And what appeared to be a lock of her mane. So Kai had a sweetheart. Or... he had a sweetheart. Perhaps if Geoff got him really drunk he could get him to talk about it.
But that would have to be later. Geoff carefully replaced the picture next to the lock of hair, replaced the false bottom, closed it, flipped it, and replaced it in the carpet's indentation. Geoff had found what he wanted to, or at least something. He tiptoed out of Kai's room and closed the door carefully behind him, positive he had returned the room to its original state.
By this time it was quite late and he supposed it was time for him to sleep. Not that there was anything else to do. Geoff was hopeful someone would return the next morning. If not, he supposed he could always wander around town and attempt to find somepony. And with that Geoff blew out the candles and returned to his room and his bed.
[Thus ends the 46th of Summer. I suppose the thread will continue as the 47th of Summer's morning. Or something. Who knows? Not I]
