A few months back, I wrote a paper on Unicorn magic in the My Little Pony universe. Since then, I've lost it, and I can't seem to find it. I'm going to rewrite it, eventually, but for now, I'm just going to publish a small section of it, here, where I detailed Kai's spells, and how they differed from that of a regular unicorn, as well as how a few of them worked.
Akaitora, having not made it all the way through magic kindergarten, learned only a few spells, which every unicorn would be able to know. Levitation, creating light, and how to direct spells at certain objects or ponies encompass the bulk of what he was able to learn during his brief time there.
Shortly after, he was removed from the school, and then from Canterlot as a whole. a bit of character development here and there, and he's suddenly a young stallion, his own repertoire of spells, some from a forgotten age, others of his own design.
His most commonly used spell is an enchanting spell; One that will cause a spell to be cast every time a specific factor changes. Take, for example, the way he lights the hallways of his castle: First, he casts and holds a spell that will emit light. Easy enough. He then needs to find a source of energy. Gemstones do so very nicely, which is why they are ideal for enchantments that ponies carry around, such as the Alicorn amulet. Keep in mind that the color of the gem will effect the spell in some way. Amethysts will produce a purple light, Rubies a red light, sapphires a blue light, etc. Kai prefers topaz. Finally, he needs a trigger to activate the spell, or it will always be active. Casting and holding a spell that will allow him to sense whenever a living being is within twenty feet alongside the illumination spell, the resulting enchantment will cause the enchanted topaz to emit light whenever somepony is within 20 feet.
Before you ask how Kai learned a spell that allows him to sense whenever somepony is within a certain distance of him, or where he learned to enchant, the castles former residents left a decent-sized library with some old spell tomes in it. They're spell tomes that anypony could have access to, but they're tricky. Kai learned through practice, and through necessity.
Now for something interesting. Kai cannot teleport. In teleporting, a unicorn disappears from one area, and materializes somewhere else. [just a note here, I find it hilarious that Chrome's dictionary doesn't include the word teleport] Now, you might be asking, if Kai is unable to teleport, then what was he doing all those times when he seemed to be teleporting? You would be right to ask that, because what Kai does is very similar. In teleporting, one disappears in a flash, and reappears in a flash at the same time. A powerful unicorn could easily teleport from one side of equestria to the other in less than a second, but they would have to be ungodly powerful, such as Celestia wielding the Alicorn Amulet on the summer solstice. Kai could make the same journey, with less energy, in about two amd a half minutes.
Now, why doesn't everypony know about this? Easy. It actually takes quite a bit of energy to cast the spell, moreso than it would to teleport from one end of Ponyville to the other. It would also take longer to go from one side of Ponyville to the other with this spell, about half a second, compared to a tenth of a second. Most ponies travelling a long distance would much rather take the train. However, that's not to say it hasn't been used canonically. Nightmare moon used a slightly altered version of the spell several times throughout the second episode. Remember when she turned herself into an orb of darkness that was capable of moving quickly through the air, the earth, and through Steven Magnet's moustache? Basically the same thing, except that Kai becomes a bright orange cloud made of light, rather than a purple cloud of darkness. Eclipse is also capable of using this spell. It's not Alicorn-level magic, but it causes the caster to become barely able to interact with their surroundings, unless they do have alicorn-level magic available to them, such as Nightmare Moon did.
That's all I have in me tonight, I'll write more theories about unicorn magic when I can keep my eyes open, and don't have job-related paperwork to fill out. Meanwhile, anyone is allowed to post their unicorn or Alicorn character's unique spells, or theories about unicorn magic, or whatever, pertaining to unicorn magic.
Paperwork, shower, laundry, bed, in that order...
